    Advertising Media and Target Audience Optimization via High-dimensional Bandits

    We present a data-driven algorithm that advertisers can use to automate their digital ad-campaigns at online publishers. The algorithm enables the advertiser to search across available target audiences and ad-media to find the best possible combination for its campaign via online experimentation. The problem of finding the best audience-ad combination is complicated by a number of distinctive challenges, including (a) a need for active exploration to resolve prior uncertainty and to speed the search for profitable combinations, (b) many combinations to choose from, giving rise to high-dimensional search formulations, and (c) very low success probabilities, typically just a fraction of one percent. Our algorithm (designated LRDL, an acronym for Logistic Regression with Debiased Lasso) addresses these challenges by combining four elements: a multiarmed bandit framework for active exploration; a Lasso penalty function to handle high dimensionality; an inbuilt debiasing kernel that handles the regularization bias induced by the Lasso; and a semi-parametric regression model for outcomes that promotes cross-learning across arms. The algorithm is implemented as a Thompson Sampler, and to the best of our knowledge, it is the first that can practically address all of the challenges above. Simulations with real and synthetic data show the method is effective and document its superior performance against several benchmarks from the recent high-dimensional bandit literature.Comment: 39 pages, 8 figure

    Biomagnetic characterization of air pollution particulates in Lahore, Pakistan

    We report the characterization of anthropogenic magnetic particulate matter (MPM) collected on leaves from roadside Callistemon (bottlebrush) trees from Lahore, Pakistan, and on known sources of traffic-related particulates to assess the potential of first-order reversal curve (FORC) diagrams to discriminate between different sources of anthropogenic magnetic particles. Magnetic measurements on leaves indicate the presence of surface-oxidized magnetite spanning the superparamagnetic (<30 nm) to single domain (∼30–70 nm) to vortex size range (∼70–700 nm). Fe-bearing particles are present both as discrete particles on the surface of larger mineral dust or carbonaceous particles and embedded within them, such that their aerodynamic sizes may be decoupled from their magnetic grain sizes. FORC diagrams of brake-pad residue specimens show a distinct combination of narrow central ridge, extending from 0 to 200 mT, and a low-coercivity, vertically spread signal, attributed to vortex and multi-vortex behavior of metallic Fe. This is in agreement with scanning electron microscopy results that show the presence of metallic as well as oxidized Fe. Exhaust-pipe residue samples display a more conventional “magnetite-like” signal comprising a lower coercivity central ridge (0–80 mT) and a tri-lobate signal attributed to vortex state and/or magnetostatic interactions. The FORC signatures of leaf samples combine aspects of both exhaust residue and brake-pad endmembers, suggesting that FORC fingerprints have the potential to identify and quantify the relative contributions from exhaust and non-exhaust (brake-wear) emissions. Such measurements may provide a cost-effective way to monitor the changing contribution; of future particulate emissions as the vehicle fleet is electrified over the coming years

    Efficacy of green infrastructure in reducing exposure to local, traffic-related sources of airborne particulate matter (PM)

    One aim of roadside green infrastructure (GI) is to mitigate exposure to local, traffic-generated pollutants. Here, we determine the efficacy of roadside GI in improving local air quality through the deposition and/or dispersion of airborne particulate matter (PM). PM was collected on both pumped air filters and on the leaves of a recently installed ‘tredge’ (trees managed as a head-high hedge) at an open road environment next to a primary school in Manchester, U.K. The magnetic properties of PM deposited on leaves and filters (size fractions PM10 and PM2.5) were deduced from hysteresis loops, first-order reversal curves (FORCs), and low-temperature remanence measurements. These were complemented with electron microscopy to identify changes in magnetic PM concentration downwind of the tredge/GI. We show that the tredge is permeable to airflow using a simple CO2 tracer experiment; hence, it allows interception and subsequent deposition of PM on its leaves. Magnetic loadings per m3 of air from filters (PM10 saturation magnetisation, Ms, at 5 K) were reduced by 40 % behind the tredge and a further 63 % in the playground; a total reduction of 78 % compared to roadside air. For the PM2.5 fraction, the reduction in magnetic loading behind the tredge was remarkable (82 %), reflecting efficient diffusional capture of sub-5 nm Fe-oxide particles by the tredge. Some direct mixing of roadside and playground air occurs at the back of the playground, caused by air flow over, and/or through gaps in, the slowly-permeable tredge. The magnetic loading on tredge leaves increased over successive days, capturing ~23 % of local, traffic-derived PM10. Using a heuristic two-dimensional turbulent mixing model, we assess the limited dispersion of PM < 22.5 μm induced by eddies in the tredge wake. This study demonstrates that PM deposition on leaves reduces exposure significantly in this school playground setting; hence, providing a cost-effective mitigation strategy

    Trial Registration: Understanding and Preventing Reporting Bias in Social Work Research

    Randomized controlled trials are considered the gold standard for evaluating social work interventions. However, published reports can systematically overestimate intervention effects when researchers selectively report large and significant findings. Publication bias and other types of reporting biases can be minimized through prospective trial registration that is now an accepted part of medical research. In this article, we explain how trial registration can promote ethical and valid trials in social work, and we explain how social work researchers can register trials. We conclude that journal editors should ask authors to report trial registration numbers in all reports of randomized trials in social work

    Cost-effectiveness of compression technologies for evidence-informed leg ulcer care: results from the Canadian Bandaging Trial

    BACKGROUND: Venous leg ulcers, affecting approximately 1% of the population, are costly to manage due to poor healing and high recurrence rates. We evaluated an evidence-informed leg ulcer care protocol with two frequently used high compression systems: ‘four-layer bandage’ (4LB) and ‘short-stretch bandage’ (SSB). METHODS: We conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis using individual patient data from the Canadian Bandaging Trial, a publicly funded, pragmatic, randomized trial evaluating high compression therapy with 4LB (n = 215) and SSB (n = 209) for community care of venous leg ulcers. We estimated costs (in 2009–2010 Canadian dollars) from the societal perspective and used a time horizon corresponding to each trial participant’s first year. RESULTS: Relative to SSB, 4LB was associated with an average 15 ulcer-free days gained, although the 95% confidence interval [−32, 21 days] crossed zero, indicating no treatment difference; an average health benefit of 0.009 QALYs gained [−0.019, 0.037] and overall, an average cost increase of 420[420 [235, 739](duetotwiceasmany4LBbandagesused);orequivalently,acostof739] (due to twice as many 4LB bandages used); or equivalently, a cost of 46,667 per QALY gained. If decision makers are willing to pay from 50,000to50,000 to 100,000 per QALY, the probability of 4LB being more cost effective increased from 51% to 63%. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings differ from the emerging clinical and economic evidence that supports high compression therapy with 4LB, and therefore suggest another perspective on high compression practice, namely when delivered by trained registered nurses using an evidence-informed protocol, both 4LB and SSB systems offer comparable effectiveness and value for money.     Ultrastructural studies have underpinned the cell biological and clinical investigations of the varied roles of motile cilia in health and disease, with a long history since the 1950s. Recent developments from transmission electron microscopy (TEM; cryo-electron microscopy, electron tomography) have yielded higher resolution and fresh insights into the structure and function of these complex organelles. Microscopy in ciliated organisms, disease models, and in patients with ciliopathy diseases has dramatically expanded our understanding of the ubiquity, multisystem involvement, and importance of cilia in normal human development.     Monocyte subsets coregulate inflammatory responses by integrated signaling through TNF and IL-6 at the endothelial cell interface.

    Two major monocyte subsets, CD14(+)CD16(−) (classical) and CD14(+/dim)CD16(+) (nonclassical/intermediate), have been described. Each has different functions ascribed in its interactions with vascular endothelial cells (EC), including migration and promoting inflammation. Although monocyte subpopulations have been studied in isolated systems, their influence on EC and on the course of inflammation has been ignored. In this study, using unstimulated or cytokine-activated EC, we observed significant differences in the recruitment, migration, and reverse migration of human monocyte subsets. Associated with this, and based on their patterns of cytokine secretion, there was a difference in their capacity to activate EC and support the secondary recruitment of flowing neutrophils. High levels of TNF were detected in cocultures with nonclassical/intermediate monocytes, the blockade of which significantly reduced neutrophil recruitment. In contrast, classical monocytes secreted high levels of IL-6, the blockade of which resulted in increased neutrophil recruitment. When cocultures contained both monocyte subsets, or when conditioned supernatant from classical monocytes cocultures (IL-6(hi)) was added to nonclassical/intermediate monocyte cocultures (TNF(hi)), the activating effects of TNF were dramatically reduced, implying that when present, the anti-inflammatory activities of IL-6 were dominant over the proinflammatory activities of TNF. These changes in neutrophil recruitment could be explained by regulation of E-selectin on the cocultured EC. This study suggests that recruited human monocyte subsets trigger a regulatory pathway of cytokine-mediated signaling at the EC interface, and we propose that this is a mechanism for limiting the phlogistic activity of newly recruited monocytes

    Integrating the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health Model into Massage Therapy Research, Education, and Practice

    Without an increase in clearly defined and clinically significant outcomes research in mas¬sage therapy (MT), the practice is in jeopardy of remaining on the fringes of accepted and utilized therapeutic care. This reality will slow the integration of MT into routine preventive, rehabilitative, curative, and supportive care. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) developed by the World Health Organization is a comprehensive model of functioning and disability that provides a universal taxonomy of human functioning that is recognized globally. Integration of the ICF model into MT research, education, and practice would provide a foundation for a common language, particularly in regard to examining outcomes of MT. Here, we review the dynamic and respected ICF model as it applies to massage research, outcomes dissemination, education, and practice, with these specific objectives: • To describe the specific domains of the ICF model • To apply the described ICF domains to current massage practice and research • To discuss how integration of the ICF model enhances communication and translation among those within and to those outside the MT field The ICF model is ideal for application to MT interests because it works outside the typical focus on pathology or a specific organ system. Instead, the ICF focuses on impairment or limitations in functioning associated with health conditions. The ICF also highlights and incorporates the complex interactions of environment and personal factors and the impact that those factors exert on the domains of body structure, activity, and participation. This interaction has unique implications for MT practitioners, researchers, and clients/patients. Furthermore, the ICF model provides a framework for classifying outcomes, which is a critical aspect of clinical research
